PARENT/JUDGE FAQs
How often do I need to judge?
That depends upon how often your student enters a tournament. We need to provide 1 judge for every 5 entries, so you should judge once for every time your child enters 5 events. For some students that is once per year, for some it is much more.
What if I don't know how to judge?
First download the "How to Judge" handout here. Mr. Sheldon or Mrs. Sheldon can give you a primer on the morning of the tournament. There is also a judges' meeting at each tournament to explain the events. Finally, the team usually runs a judge training in October or November of each year.
Do we have to meet you at Bancroft before a tournament or can we just drive right to the tournament?
We do need everyone, students and judges, to meet at Bancroft on the morning of the tournament. The reason for this is that we have to call into the tournament one hour ahead in order to confirm our entries and judges. That helps the tournament start faster. There is too much to keep track of on the tournament mornings to have multiple cars coming to the tournament from multiple places.
What is the dress code at a tournament?
For judges, the dress code is casual. In most cases, the competitors will be better dressed than the judges. Jeans are fine.
Can I come "shadow" a more experienced judge before I start to judge myself?
Absolutely. This is a great way to learn how to judge. And you don't need to attend for the entire day like you would if you were judging. Just let Mr. Sheldon or Mrs. Sheldon know which tournament you would like to attend, and they can set it up.
